Alonzo Teah Abasi, (April the 16th, 1985) is best known by his fans simply as ‘Alonzo’ is a Sierra Leonean/ Liberian songwriter, recording artist, and performer.
In 2002, the US embassy in Liberia organised a competition for HIV/AIDS, whereby they asked members of the public to create a song that promotes awareness for HIV/AIDS. With this a hopeful Alonzo entered the competition and ultimately went on to win the competition. This kick-started the musical career of Alonzo, as the US embassy continued to sponsor him as he recorded his single.
With this Alonzo became infatuated with music and all it entailed, and went on to record his first mix tape ‘INNOCENT’ in Nigeria; which was released in Liberia in 2006. The mix tape received public recognition and was a huge success with songs such as; Letter to the president, Liberian angel, Can’t believe and the single named after the first mix-tape, Innocent.
Following the success of this mix-tape, Alonzo was approached and signed to Kallboxx records in Sierra Leone in 2008. In the latter part of that year, Alonzo then released his debut studio album titled ‘Africa unite”. Alonzo rose to prominence with the release of the song Angel, in which he spoke about his long distance relationship with his love. This became a favourite song within Sierra Leone and beyond, with many people referencing this song to their loved ones.
The album titled track, Africa unite, became an international hit in countries such as America and UK. As the track continued to do well, the BBC radio network took a huge interest in Alonzo’s work and frequently played his work across the BBC network. This led to Alonzo securing a lucrative deal with leading record label Sony and BMG, with the track featuring on the best of Africa mix tape (2008) alongside artists such as; Yousour Ndour and the late Mariam Makeba from South Africa.
With Alonzo now in the forefront of Africa, in 2009 he was invited by MTV music Africa to represent Sierra Leone as the country’s favourite artist. At the pre MAMA (MTV African Music Awards) in Kenya, Alonzo performed with African music greats, such as Akon and Wyclef Jean. Since then, Alonzo has not stopped working and has continued to strive to always remain one step ahead of the musical game. This includes performing at sold out concerts internationally.
